How to clean a monitor safely
Modern screens have a thin anti-glare or oleophobic coating on the front. Most screen damage from cleaning is not scratched glass — it is a stripped coating, and it is permanent.
What you need
- A clean, dry microfibre cloth. Not a paper towel, not a tissue, not the corner of a shirt — wood fibre is abrasive enough to haze a coating over time.
- Distilled water, if anything more than dry wiping is needed.
- Optionally, a screen-safe cleaner explicitly labelled as ammonia-free and alcohol-free.
What destroys screens
Window cleaner, kitchen spray, isopropyl alcohol at full strength and anything containing ammonia or acetone will attack the coating. The damage shows up as cloudy patches that no amount of further cleaning removes. Once a coating is stripped, the only fix is a new panel.
The method
Turn the display off first. A dark screen shows every mark, and a cold panel is less likely to leave streaks as liquid evaporates. It also removes any risk of pressing on an energised panel.
- Blow or lightly brush loose dust off before you touch the surface. Dragging grit across the screen is how you scratch it.
- Wipe dry first, in one direction, with light pressure. Most marks come off dry.
- For anything left, dampen a corner of the cloth with distilled water. Damp, not wet.
- Never spray liquid onto the screen. It runs down into the bezel and into the panel edge, and that is a genuine failure mode.
- Finish with a dry section of the cloth.
Checking your work
This is where a white screen earns its place. Dust and residual smudges are nearly invisible on a running desktop but obvious against a full-screen white field. Clean the screen off, then power it back on, open a full white screen, and look across it at an angle. Do the same on black — black shows dust that white hides, and white shows greasy smears that black hides. Use both.
Laptop screens and keyboard marks
Those faint shiny marks in a grid pattern on a laptop screen are keyboard imprints, transferred from the keys when the lid is closed. They are oil, and they come off with the damp method above. Preventing them is a matter of a thin microfibre sheet laid over the keyboard before closing the lid.
Touchscreens
Touchscreens carry an oleophobic coating designed to shed fingerprints, and that coating wears off with heavy cleaning — especially with alcohol. Dry microfibre for daily use, distilled water for anything stubborn, and accept that after a few years of daily handling the coating will be thinner regardless.
