What causes backlight bleed

Almost every LCD leaks some light. The question is never whether your panel has bleed — it is whether the bleed you have is outside normal variation for the panel type you bought.

Bleed versus glow

Backlight bleed is light escaping around the edges of the panel where the frame does not seal perfectly against the light guide. It looks like patches or streaks of brightness at the edges and corners, and it stays in the same place no matter where you sit.

IPS glow is different. It is a silvery, warm haze in the corners that changes as you move your head — shift left and the glow moves. It is an inherent property of how IPS panels handle off-axis light, not a defect, and no IPS panel is free of it.

The head-movement test settles it in two seconds: if it moves, it is glow; if it is fixed, it is bleed.

Testing properly

Bleed testing is easy to get wrong in a way that makes any panel look broken.

How much is too much

The honest answer: if you cannot see it during normal use — watching a film with letterbox bars, reading dark-mode text — it does not matter, whatever it looks like on a black test screen. If bleed is visible in ordinary dark content and pulls your eye away from what you are doing, that is a reasonable basis for a return.

Bleed usually settles somewhat over the first few weeks as the panel and frame relax. It rarely gets worse.

Can it be fixed

A common suggestion is to gently massage the affected corner with a microfibre cloth to reseat the light guide. It occasionally helps a little on cheaper panels and it does nothing on most. Loosening over-tightened screws on the back of the chassis is sometimes suggested too and is best left alone unless you are comfortable voiding a warranty.

For a new monitor with severe bleed, the sane move is an exchange rather than a repair attempt.
