Why is my screen flickering

Screen flicker has a handful of common causes and one efficient way to find yours: change one variable at a time, starting with the cheapest.

Establish where the flicker lives

Before troubleshooting, work out whether the flicker follows the screen or the source. Display a solid full-screen colour. If the flicker persists on a static solid colour, it is hardware, cable or refresh-related. If it only appears in one application or while scrolling, it is software or a rendering problem.

Then, if you can, connect the display to a different device — a laptop, a console, anything. Flicker that follows the monitor points at the monitor or its cable. Flicker that stays with the computer points at the graphics output or driver.

Cable and connection

This is the single most common cause and the cheapest to rule out. Reseat both ends firmly. Try a different cable, ideally a different type — swap DisplayPort for HDMI or vice versa. Marginal or damaged cables at high resolutions and refresh rates cause intermittent flicker and blackouts that look exactly like a failing panel. Avoid unpowered adapters and long unbranded extensions when diagnosing.

Refresh rate mismatch

Check the refresh rate your system is actually sending, and confirm it is one the panel supports. A rate set slightly out of range, or a variable-refresh feature interacting badly with a specific application, produces flicker particularly in dark scenes. Try locking to a standard rate — 60Hz — temporarily. If the flicker disappears, you have found the area to work in, whether that is a VRR setting, an overclock or an unsupported mode.

Drivers and power management

Roll the graphics driver back to the previous stable version if the flicker started after an update. On laptops, check adaptive brightness and panel self-refresh settings, both of which cause visible pulsing on some hardware. On desktops, an underpowered or failing power supply can produce flicker that worsens under GPU load — a useful clue is flicker that only appears while gaming.

Backlight PWM

Many displays dim their backlight by switching it on and off rapidly. At low brightness the switching frequency can drop enough that sensitive people perceive flicker, eye strain or headaches, even though a camera might not register it. The test is simple: raise brightness substantially. If the sensation eases, PWM is the likely culprit, and the fix is either a higher brightness with lower software contrast, or a flicker-free monitor.

When it is the panel

If flicker survives a new cable, a different source device, a standard refresh rate and a clean driver, the panel or its driver board is failing. Flickering that spreads from one edge, appears alongside horizontal lines, or worsens as the monitor warms up all point the same way. At that stage the question is warranty status, not further troubleshooting.
