IPS vs VA vs TN vs OLED
Panel type sets the ceiling on what a monitor can do. Everything else — refresh rate, resolution, ports — is a specification you can compare. Panel type is a set of trade-offs you have to choose between.
IPS
Strong colour accuracy and wide viewing angles, with colours that hold up when you are not sitting dead centre. Contrast is the weak point: blacks look grey in a dark room, and every IPS panel has some corner glow. Modern IPS is fast enough for gaming, which used to be its other disadvantage.
Best for: design and photo work, shared screens, general office use, and most people most of the time.
VA
Much higher native contrast than IPS — deep blacks and real depth in dark content. The trade-off is speed: VA pixels transition slowly between dark shades, producing a smeary dark trail in fast motion that some people find very distracting and others never notice. Colour also shifts more off-axis than IPS.
Best for: film and dark-room use, curved ultrawides, anyone who cares more about contrast than about motion clarity.
TN
The oldest of the four. Cheap and very fast, with poor viewing angles and mediocre colour — tilt a TN panel slightly and the image visibly shifts. Largely displaced now that IPS has become fast and affordable.
Best for: budget builds and competitive gaming where response time outweighs everything else.
OLED
Each pixel emits its own light, so black is genuinely black, contrast is effectively infinite, and response times are far beyond what LCD can do. The trade-offs are burn-in risk with static content, lower full-screen sustained brightness than a good LCD, and a higher price. Text rendering can also look slightly fringed on some OLED sub-pixel layouts, which matters more for spreadsheets than for games.
Best for: film, games, dark-room use, and anyone who has seen real OLED contrast and cannot go back.
Choosing quickly
- Colour work or a shared screen: IPS.
- Dark room, films, contrast above all: VA or OLED.
- Competitive gaming on a budget: TN or fast IPS.
- Mixed media and best-in-class image, static desktop use minimised: OLED.
- Eight hours a day of the same static dashboard at high brightness: not OLED.
Test the panel you receive
Panel lottery is real and two units of the same model can differ. When a new monitor arrives, run solid colours for dead pixels, a black screen in a dim room for bleed and glow, a grey field for uniformity, and a moving-object pattern for smearing — all before the return window closes.
