Burn-in on an OLED is uneven ageing. Each pixel generates its own light, and pixels driven hard for a long time dim faster than their neighbours, leaving a faint permanent ghost of whatever was static — a channel logo, a taskbar, a game HUD.

What most people encounter is not burn-in but image retention: a temporary ghost that fades on its own within seconds or minutes. This test helps tell them apart. Run the colour cycle for ten to thirty minutes; retention will clear, and anything still visible afterwards is likely permanent.

The full-field colour wash is also the standard way to shift mild retention. Red, green and blue in turn exercise every sub-pixel evenly, which is exactly what the built-in "pixel refresh" routine on an OLED television is doing.

Cleaning a monitor

A bright, even screen makes dust, smudges and fingerprints obvious. Check first, power the display off, then wipe with a dry microfibre cloth.

Finding dead pixels

A dead pixel stays black on white; a stuck pixel glows red, green or blue on black. Cycling solid colours is still the fastest way to find both.

Video call lighting

A white or warm-white screen beside your face fills in shadows far better than a ceiling light, and costs nothing.

Photography and video

A tablet running a solid colour makes a usable fill light, catch light or small backdrop for product shots.

Is the oled burn-in test really free?

Yes. Every tool on this site is free, with no account, no trial and no paid tier. You do not need to give us an email address.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The whole site is built mobile-first and works in Safari on iPhone and iPad, Chrome on Android, and every modern desktop browser. On iOS, fullscreen uses a full-viewport mode because Safari restricts the fullscreen API.

Does it work offline?

Yes. After your first visit the page is cached on your device, so you can open it again with no internet connection at all.

Will this damage my screen?

No. Displaying a solid colour is exactly what your screen does all day. The one caution is OLED: leaving a static bright image on an OLED panel for hours can cause temporary image retention, which is why we include an optional burn-in protection mode.

Do you collect my data?

We do not ask for a name, an email or an account, and no image ever leaves your device — every tool renders locally in your browser.

Is this test itself risky for an OLED?

Running full-brightness colour fields for a few minutes is fine and is what a manufacturer's own pixel-refresh cycle does. What damages an OLED is a static bright image left for hours. Turn on burn-in protection in the controls and lower the brightness if you plan to leave any screen up for a long time.

Can burn-in be reversed?

True burn-in is physical wear on the emitters and cannot be undone. A colour wash and the panel's own compensation cycle can even out mild cases so they become much harder to see, but the underlying difference in brightness remains.

Do modern OLEDs still suffer from this?

Far less than early ones. Pixel shifting, logo dimming and automatic refresh cycles have made burn-in unlikely under normal mixed use. The risk is still real for a display showing the same static interface for many hours a day.
